Tartan questions May 19, 2015 5:16 PM

I've learned I am a decendant of Edward Doughtery.
There was a rumor my Mexican roots had ties to Ireland as there was an Irishmen buried in our family cemetary. After searching, I found much info on Edward Dougherty (born in County Cavan, Ireland on June 9 1819). He had several children that settled in south Texas after he moved there. Edward Dougherty died May 25, 1877, buried with all my other ancestors.
I play in a bagpipe and drum band, so I thought that was as close as I would get to wearing a tartan. Learning much of the Dougherty / Doherty Clan, and where my Irish ancestor was born, I have a few questions:
-
Would it be appropriate for me to purchase a kilt with the Cavan tartan (where Edward was born)?
-
I read Doherty Clan is from Donegal, is it appropriate for me to use that county's tartan?
I would like to represent my roots properly and ask for guidance or any comments anyone has to offer me.
Thanks
